To truly benefit from the transformative potential of the Enneagram, coaching is a great way to get from theoretical study to embodied development. Coaching supports us to put the self-learning into practice. Coaching is a mixture of education and application, which will include didactic, dyadic and socratic work, somatic tracking and sensations-focused practices, journaling, role play, reading and homework assignments, all of which coincide with the learnings shared in session and the objectives that have been established.

Coaching is focused on the learning and growth underfoot and applying the learnings to one’s daily interactions, daily work, the relationship we have with self and those relationships we have with others. Personalized coaching supports the embodiment of our personal and professional development, which leads to bettering each of our interpersonal relationships, including (and so critically) our parenting (for those of us parents).

And for those harder times in our lives, learning the Enneagram, which is such a great “self-awareness” model for enhanced self-regulation,  can make all the difference in the world. As the more consciously and compassionately we come to know ourselves and our defense systems, the less fearful and terrorized we may come to be as we face the greater and more overwhelming challenges of a typical and highly complex human life.

Enneagram coaching, any coaching for that matter, is not psychotherapy, but it is coordinated and complementary to one’s deeper inner work. Coaching is a powerful way to take our own development into our own hands. Because the Enneagram is just about the most powerful self-assessment, de-shaming, self-empowering “body of learning” available, it surely saves eons of time and struggle trying to figure ourselves out alone!

The Enneagram instead provides an incisive map to understanding ourselves — acceptingly, motivationally, temperamentally — and guides each of us toward our own profound self-insights. With it, we come to learn and own our inherent strengths and gifts, as well as excavate (gently) and intriguingly our identity-controlling, “who I have to be to be worthy” blindspots. The Enneagram sheds light on our internally driven, core motivations, and does so without shaming us. As a result, our habitual defense patterns and well-worn adaptive strategies begin to make sense and become more readily identifiable.

All that said, Enneagram study when combined with coaching is designed to enhance and not replace other clinical therapies that may be necessary and beneficial.

COACHING for INDIVIDUALS, using the Enneagram

Individual coaching always begins with an assessment of desired outcomes and an Enneagram Self-discovery Interview and the coach-with-client determination of one’s fundamental type structure, primary wing, dominant instinctual drive, and level of developmental well-being.

COACHING for RELATIONSHIPS, using the Enneagram

Relationships coaching always begins with a declaration of the issues at hand as well as desired outcomes, and an Enneagram Self-discovery Interview for each individual. The coaching process also includes the coach-with-client determination of one’s wings, dominant instinctual drive, and level of developmental well-being.

Relationships coaching focuses on the challenges caused by each person’s defense system and is custom-designed to meet the needs and challenges of the relational dynamics.

Relationships coaching includes a focus on the adaptive strategies, emotional regulation and dysregulation, and attachment patterns of each individual. 100 out of 100, reactivity, retaliatory reactivity,  and the defense system are the critical challenges faced in each relationship and the main source of the suffering and discord experienced. Seemingly immovable defenses can make resolution feel “stuck” and nearly impossible.

COACHING for PARENTING, using the Enneagram

Parenting coaching always begins with an assessment and dialogue about the issues and hopes as well as an Enneagram Self-discovery Interview for the parent/caregiver as well as for the child/children involved (age appropriate). The coaching process also includes the coach-with-client determination of the wings, dominant instinctual drive, and level of developmental well-being for all individuals involved.

Parenting according to our own Enneagram type, that which may not be aligned with a given child’s temperamental needs, combined with the impacts of our own level of developmental well-being (how wounded and/or how self-aware are we?) are a significant focus of coaching for parenting, using the Enneagram.

Individual coaching for self-recovery, after suffering relational-abuse, loss and trauma always begins with an Enneagram Self-discovery Interview and the coach-with-client determination of one’s wings, dominant instinctual drive, and level of developmental well-being.

Self-recovery coaching, particularly after relational-challenge, dissolution, abuses and/or emotional heartache focuses on the Enneagram type structure, the defense mechanisms, adaptive-coping strategies, and defense system of one’s type, with the goal being to return to, recover, and fortify one’s self-love, self-agency and self-sovereignty, and self-empowerment. Whether recovering from co-dependency, highly volatile emotional dysregulation, addictive disorders, or avoidance strategies, it all begins and ends with the self and a caring journey inward.

As Gabor Maté says, “It’s not what’s wrong with me, but, what happened to me?” And how did the structure of my spiritual-neurological being organize itself to survive, cope, and compensate?”

I recently read online that it takes 12 weeks of training to become ‘an Enneagram Coach.’ 12 weeks may be enough to create an enthusiast — excited and eager to learn more, but it’s not enough to become a teacher, let alone a coach.

The Enneagram is a multi-layered, highly complex spiritual-neurobiological, “essence that which organizes ego” systemized map that takes years not weeks to learn comprehensively and effectively.

“Outwardly” visible behavioral traits, which is what’s popularized the Enneagram as of late, is a far cry from the self-organizing structures that drive behavior — and our interpretation of self, other, and the world — from within.  To take others from learning the “types” to the transcendence of their personal type-predictable suffering requires our own profound work be pursued and mastered first.

Learning the transformative wisdom for self- and other-understanding and  the life-enhancing self-development this system has to offer each one of us — mankind as a whole — is a process worthy of reverence, ongoing diligence, and much devoted study.

For those of you currently coaching and teaching, but looking to deepen your comprehensive knowledge and applications of this system, including accurate typing protocol, developmental practices and exercises, and defense system excavation and liberation, “coaching for your coaching” and/or teaching may be highly beneficial.

For those just starting albeit with professional intentions, wanting to learn more about self and other and the multi-complexities of the system as a whole, my Enneagram System and TYPING T.I.P.S. foundational Enneagram didactic courses may also be a great place to start.
